The Best Places to Elope in Colorado (According to a Local Photographer)
Colorado is one of the best places in the world to elope.
From alpine lakes and high mountain passes to quiet backcountry meadows, the state offers an incredible range of scenery for couples who want an adventurous wedding day.
But after photographing many elopements across the state, I’ve learned something most travel blogs don’t mention:
The most jaw-dropping places to elope in Colorado usually aren’t the most famous ones.
Iconic locations like Maroon Bells and Sapphire Point Overlook are beautiful, but they can also be extremely crowded and require permits months in advance.
The locations that truly surprise couples are often:
- a little more adventurous
- a little less obvious
- and sometimes just a little farther from the parking lot
Below are some of my favorite jaw-dropping Colorado elopement locations based on real experiences photographing couples there.
Loveland Pass: Huge Mountain Views with Almost No Hiking
If you want epic alpine scenery without hiking for miles, Loveland Pass is one of the most surprising locations in Colorado.
The views look like something out of a national park, but the pass is actually accessible right off the highway.
The biggest secret to having an incredible elopement here is timing.
Sunset can be beautiful, but it’s also when crowds tend to show up. When couples want a quieter experience, I almost always recommend sunrise.
At sunrise:
- the light is incredible
• the mountains feel peaceful
• and there are far fewer people
The only downside is the temperature.
Even in summer, sunrise at Loveland Pass can be freezing cold, so warm layers are essential.
Piney River Ranch: Possibly the Most Jaw-Dropping View Near Vail
If couples ask me for the most jaw-dropping scenery near Vail, my answer is usually Piney River Ranch.
The view of Mount of the Holy Cross towering above Piney Lake is absolutely stunning.
There’s only one catch: the road getting there is very bumpy.
Most vehicles can make it when conditions are dry, but having good suspension definitely helps.
The drive is completely worth it though.
One of the most memorable elopements I’ve photographed happened here in late November.
Normally Piney River Ranch is inaccessible that late because of snow. But one year we hadn’t had a big storm yet, so the day before the elopement I called the couple and asked if they wanted to attempt the drive.
They said yes.
Not only did we make it out there, but during their ceremony a moose wandered near the lake.
Being deep in the mountains that late in the season with fresh snow on the peaks made the entire experience unforgettable.

Shrine Pass: One of Colorado’s Best Hidden Elopement Location
If couples want big mountain views without the crowds, I often recommend Shrine Pass.
It’s located near Vail but feels much more remote.
What makes Shrine Pass special is the number of quiet little spots scattered throughout the area. It’s easy to find secluded viewpoints that feel like you’re completely alone in the mountains.
This is where hiring a local photographer really helps.
Knowing the hidden pull-offs and lesser-known viewpoints can make a huge difference when planning a private ceremony.
Vail Gondola: A Scenic Elopement with Built-In Adventure
Taking the gondola to the top of Vail Mountain provides some of the best views in the Vail Valley.
One important thing to know is that ceremonies need to happen during gondola operating hours, since sunset rides are no longer offered.
But adventurous couples can turn this into a truly unique elopement experience.
One of my favorite ideas is:
- ride the gondola up
• exchange vows with alpine views
• mountain bike down to Minturn afterward
• celebrate with a drink at Minturn Saloon
It turns an elopement into a full mountain adventure.
Breckenridge Catwalk: A Wild Drive to the Top of the Mountains
For couples who want a little adventure, driving up to the top of Breckenridge Ski Resort can be an unforgettable experience.
The road to the summit isn’t for the faint of heart, but the reward is 360-degree mountain views.
Weekdays are especially great because you can often have the entire summit to yourselves.
Just remember that even in summer it can be cold and windy at that elevation.
Tennessee Pass Cookhouse Intimate Wedding
For couples who are wanting to invite a few friends or family, this is the absolute best place to gather! With Yurts to sleep in, a Yurt with fine dining and a beautiful meadow for exchanging vows, you cannot go wrong with this adventure.
Sylvan Lake Area near Eagle Colorado should not be overlooked!
For couples looking to really get off the beaten path, this is such a great spot! Tucked away behind the town of Eagle is this gorgeous meadow with a huge mountain in the background. Book a yurt to get ready in and your trip is planned!
Are Famous Colorado Elopement Locations Overrated?
Two of the most famous elopement spots in Colorado are:
- Maroon Bells
- Sapphire Point Overlook
They’re iconic for a reason, but they also come with challenges:
- heavy crowds
- strict permits
- limited availability
They can still work beautifully with the right planning, but couples looking for a quiet and intimate experience often prefer lesser-known locations.
Expert Tips for Finding a Jaw-Dropping Colorado Elopement Location
Be willing to hike
The most spectacular locations often require a short hike.
Even hiking one mile can help you escape parking lot crowds and find much more private scenery.
Sunrise is your best friend
Popular spots like Loveland Pass are dramatically quieter at sunrise.
Just prepare for very cold temperatures.
Some of the best locations require 4WD
Backcountry passes like Engineer Pass require high-clearance vehicles, but the scenery is incredible.
Stay flexible with mountain weather
Colorado weather can change quickly. Keeping an eye on the forecast and adjusting plans when needed helps ensure a safe and beautiful elopement.
